Stairs versus Elevator

Nov

03

2009

Do you typically take the stairs or elevator? Well check this out, it may change your mind…

 Stairs

There was a study in England and Ireland where people were asked to walk up the stairs at work each day for 8 weeks.  They started out easy with just one flight of stairs and gradually worked up to walking 200 steps which took on average about 2 minutes.  They went up the stairs six times during the work day for a total of 12 minutes.

The results?

In just 2 months these folks increased their HDL (the good cholesterol) and improved the ratio of good cholesterol to bad.  They improved their work capacity (as measured by their “VO2 Max” and a decrease in the production of metabolic wastes during exercise).  Experts calculated that in just 8 weeks they had decreased their chance of having a heart attack by 33%!

Another study looked at a much larger group of individuals.  In this study, participants had to do 100 steps per day for a total of 6 minutes spread throughout the day. These folks had similar benefits: decreased their risk for cardiovascular disease by about 20%.

So even if you think you don’t have time to exercise, try opting for the stairs instead of the elevator next time!

Introducing the "Baja Scooter"!

By: Hugo Malan, President, Fitness & Sporting Goods

Being able to introduce a new line of products to our customers is one of the more rewarding experiences in our business. This is especially true if the products represent an interesting new technology, or a fun experience for the user.

This weekend we will be piloting just such a product area in one of our stores (in Augusta, Georgia), where we will offer a series of motorized scooters and recreational ATVs for the FIRST TIME. These are mostly gas-powered, but included in the assortment will also be an electric scooter that can charge overnight from any regular outlet, and go up to 30 miles on a single charge.

You can see the electric scooter in the photo below, which is bright red and white. It is the one with the $799 price tag. (No, that is not a mistake.)

If you happen to be lucky enough to live in the Augusta, Georgia area, do stop by and take a look at these entertaining products. If not, you can see the electric scooter online at sears.com by searching for "baja scooter".

Our team has certainly enjoyed having samples of these products around the office for the past few weeks!
